Achievement Hunting
I spent most of Friday morning and early afternoon doing pug heroics - after speccing back to resto I had wanted to ‘warm up’ my healing skills again. Most of them were reasonably pleasant and I enjoyed the challenge of working with groups I did not know the limitations of. When the afternoon rolled around, though, I was asked to go with a guild group and jumped at the chance (well, after I convinced them Occulus was so not a good idea *ahem*).
One of the group, Indigo, asked aout doing some achievements in Azjol Nerub and we all figured ‘why not’. Cue one of the most fun hours I’ve spent in a heroic recently. It was what has been ‘missing’ from a lot of raids for me -- the ‘omg we finally did it and I had to use, like, all my abilities and some funky strat to do it’ type of fun. I don’t know about anyone else but I like the feeling of only managing something by ‘the skin of my teeth’. Ok, when you’re doing it for the 4/5th time you want it to be a bit smooth but the first few times of nailbiting-ness is what I loved about raiding.
Well, A-N gave me a little of that back in the form of the ‘Watch Him Die‘ achievement.
Defeat Krik’thir the Gatewatcher in Azjol-Nerub on Heroic Difficulty while Watcher Gashra, Watcher Narjil and Watcher Silthik are still alive.
What does that mean? Apparently lots of web wraps, poisons, disorients, and spike damage on your tank. We had come with myself (resto shammy), a protadin, dps DK, shadow priest, and mage. We did a few tries, perused wowhead, tried a few of the strategies posted there and got close. Still, it eluded us -- with kiting the mobs would run back or the kiting tank would die to early and with two cloth wearers we couldn’t survive the returning mobs and just barging in was also tough for similar reasons. Then our Protadin (our usual raid leader) noticed the little ledge beside the boss and cooked up a plan…
I took a little video as its easier to explain that way:
It’s a simple technique -- oft used in Burning Crusade instances to solo chests (aggro, then make the mobs reset and run back a long path, whilst you loot a chest out of combat).
For anyone else who is having trouble brute-forcing this achievement, I hope this helps :3
